More about Edinburgh photographer Andrew JL Ansell Photographic.

We are a family-run independent business, based in Morningside, Edinburgh. We work from home and on location to keep costs down for you. Andrew is the photographer, Susan works behind the scenes, and our two boys have been known to get roped in on occasion!

About Edinburgh photographer Andrew JL Ansell

Andrew JL Ansell.

Here’s a bit about me – I started taking pictures when I was a child and haven’t stopped since!

I think I was always destined to be a photographer.

My love for photography grew from playing with point and click cameras to when I was given my first 35mm camera for my 13th birthday and started to take it seriously. Now over 30 years (and a lot of cameras!) later I’m still going, it’s my hobby as well as my full-time job – have a look at my Instagram feeds @ajlansellwedding and my more personal feed,  @ajlansellphoto!

I first studied photography after leaving school, and am continually learning. Along the way I’ve studied photography and design at Glasgow School of Art, seen the rise of digital imaging and the passing of film and chemical based processes. I love photographing weddings and I’ve amassed a wealth of experience and techniques that I’m still adding to. After becoming a dad in 2006, I’ve become adept at children’s and family portrait photography, which requires a whole new skill set in helping to put nervous young subjects at ease in the studio.

I’ve exhibited fine art photography nationally and worked for clients from all over the world. Being a photographer has given me access to places most people don’t get to go – some of my favourites are in Edinburgh, being a World Heritage site. It has also helped me meet some of my heroes. As an avid reader, I have been privileged to meet many of my favourite authors, working at the author events at Edinburgh Central Library.

In mid-2017, my wife of 12 years (has it been that long already?), joined the team behind the scenes, to give me more time to devote to my side of the business. She’s taking over the technical side of running the website and marketing, so I have more time to work with you doing what I love – being a photographer.

Contact me today, I’d love to chat to you about your photography needs.

Susan Ansell

Hello, I’m Susan, otherwise known as The Wife! You probably won’t see me – I’m not a photographer. Most of my work is behind the scenes working on the website, social media and advertising.

I’m a scientist by training, so I’m used to continually learning and updating my skills, and I’m welcoming the challenge of helping in the family business! After leaving science when our second son was born, I found myself starting my own business, running a baby sling consultancy and library together with an online shop. After 5 great years, it was taking over all the space in our flat so I made the decision to close ShowMe Slings, leaving more room for Andrew to fill with photography equipment of course! In August 2017 I officially joined the Andrew JL Ansell Photographic team, learning a whole new skill set with the help of Business Gateway. I can recommend their workshops, they have been incredibly useful!

It’s pretty ironic that I ended up a photographer’s wife as I’m not too keen on having my photo taken! However, after organising our own wedding and having two lovely children, I do have some experience from the client point of view, which I always keep in mind when I’m writing articles for the blog. Do have a look if you’re wondering how to choose a wedding photographer, or what will happen in the studio at a family photoshoot. I aim to put your mind at rest, but you can always get in touch if you have any questions. Andrew and I will look forward to hearing from you!

The boys.

We have two sons who love to help out on studio days. Sometimes the best thing they can do to help is stay out of the way(!), but having said that, they are great at helping to set up the studio and sitting for lighting tests. They have even been known to step in to entertain children on photoshoots when necessary – they are excellent bubble-blowers!
